Why Study Latin?

The simple answer is that Latin teaches students English better than studying English teaches English.

It is said that 60% of English words are derived from Latin, so when you master one Latin vocabulary word, you are able to decode the meaning of many English vocabulary words.

Example:

Latin: Specto (to look at)

English: Spectator, spectacle, spectacular, perspective, inspect, expectation

This allows students a much broader vocabulary with less effort than studying English vocabulary, leading to richer writing, better reading comprehension, and of course higher SAT scores. Latin is a very formulaic language and helps students order their mind around written language.
